The only thing on the bobbin that is or, could be broken is the small screw and, it's probably out of adjustment. Usually this is the case. If you want to try that.

The screw is very small so be careful, use a small eyeglass screwdriver. Take the thread first, hold it with one hand and drop the bobbin, it should drop about one inch. If it doesn't, the bobbin is to tight and the thread Will keep breaking.
Loosen the screw about an eighth on an turn at a time. Then try it again. Don't drop it hard. Only let it go, it should drop about an inch.
Then loosen it again. Keep doing this until it drops freely about an inch. Make sure you have the bobbin wound around the end correctly, it'll work both ways but, it'll only work one way right, so make sure it's right, it'll keep snagging if it's wound wrong.

And, last, make sure you have the right size thread in the bobbin and the thread is the same size as the thread in the spool, if it isn't, it won't work right either.

There are a lot of things to consider here, everything has to be right to work.

You still have time since you said it was for a Christmas party:) Is it the bobbin or the bobbin casing? Both are replaceable. I am assuming you mean the casing and you didn't exactly say how or what was broken on it. What kind of machine does she have? More info would help.
