Her father had England split from the Catholic Church and he (King Henry VIII) started the Church of England. In the U.S. it's known as the Episcopalian Church. Elizabeth, however, cemented that split with the Roman Catholic Church by killing off all Roman Catholic Bishops. The only Catholic Church officials who had the authority to ordain new priests. So, the chain of succession in the priesthood was ended and the Church of England became the official religion of England.

Desertviking was correct. Also, Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Ann Bolen- whom was Henry VIII's illegitamate daughter from a previous adulterous affair that he had while he was married to Queen Catherine of Aragon. Yes Ann Bolen was his daughter and together, they made Elizabeth I.

Honestly..I don't know as I wasn't around then.A good bet would be to try Wikipedia. funny, I was just reading about the royal family last night.( didn't check her though)
