Chinese people eat dog. I've eaten it with them. It's not an everyday thing, but they do eat it. It's a specialty offered by a few restaurants, and compared to other things, its not cheap. There's a tradition of it having some sort of medicinal value. I've seen this first hand; (Dumbest genius is right, and not just because Wikipedia said so.)

That doesn't mean they serve dog meat to unknowing customers of Chinese takeouts in the west.

If you don't think our answers are credible, then do your own research...you've got the whole Internet. No one here owes you citations or a bibliography.

I've seen Skinned dogs in the meat sections of native markets of of Guangzhou China, Papua New Guinea and several other countries around the world. Fat Puppies were a delicacy for Native Americans of the Western plains. Horse Meat is served in several resturants in Paris France. Various Insects are staples in Africa........What I'm trying to say, if it can be digested by humans, there is probably some place where it is being eaten right now.

While there are a lot of urban myths about /American/ Chinese restaurants cooking up dogs and cats (or variants such as Purina being asked to make dog soup by Koreans), there ARE countries that view dogs and cats as either vermin or livestock.

That's a far cry from saying that it'll happen at a Chinese restaurant, or that Asian Americans eat dogs. And it's always been more popular in Korea and the northernmost parts of Asia, not the places where your traditional Mandarin and Szechuan Chinese food come from.

Of course, just so you have some perspective, there's a lot of poor European countries where you can eat rat meat.

I won't consume clever species because of the fact i detect that repellent. for that reason I won't consume squid, octopus, or pig. all people's have been given a various reason for why they gained't consume some thing. (and for the checklist- somewhat some very undesirable human beings proceed to exist by way of ingesting canines. This i will settle for- grudgingly. besides the shown fact that, the wealthy French and French/Canadians ingesting horse--- gross, disgusting, and how the horses are transported and slaughtered- purely undeniable merciless.) EDIT: to cutejulie: unquestionably, i detect all production facility farming hideous. i do no longer consume beef. i will consume the unfastened-selection chickens my close by butcher will strengthen. additionally, I consume all wild activity mutually with deer, bison, elk, rabbit, pheasant, and so on. i think of a properly-placed bullet or arrow into an animal that has lived wild all its existence is the main humane technique of aquiring meat. era.

The Chinese always have been eating dogs, from the Zhou Dynasty. This practice is still quite prevalent in China/Hong Kong and Korea.
However, given the crack down by the animal rights group, much of the shops that offers this has somewhat quieten down.
Chinese has viewed dog meat at somewhat a tonice food, believing it to boost the vitality, and stave of the cold in winter.

It is a fact that some cultures in Asia eat, what westerners consider domestic animals. However, in these cultures, these pets are considered delicacies and are quite expensive. In China and Indonesia, it is cats. In Korea, it is dogs. I had Kagolgi (dog) in Korea. It is very much like roast, only greasier. and sweeter.

Yes. Many Asian countries consider dog meat a delicacy. I don't know what you are looking for in terms of "proof", but dog meat IS eaten.

When I was in grade school, our teacher decided to have an International Foods Day. Students were asked to bring in a dish from their native country (or the country their family at one time descended from) and the whole class was to partake in sampling these foods from different countries and cultures. A good friend of mine, who was from either Taiwan or Thailand, approached the teacher after class the day she announced our special day, to see if it would be okay to bring in a dish containing dog meat. Even though my friend explained that it was considered a delicacy in her country, our teacher, naturally, forbade it.

There used to be a series of movies called "Faces of Death" that depicted gruesome deaths and gory incidents. I made the mistake of watching it with a friend (it was horrible!) and in one scene they showed an Asian family preparing a litter of puppies for a meal. The puppies weren't euthanized, but put in the frying pan still alive!

In our Western culture it is generally considered taboo to eat dog meat, but there are many people (Asian or otherwise) that eat it. Many countries have tried to ban the selling (or eating) of dog meat, citing that it is unethical because the dogs are often killed inhumanely, but it still takes place in even those countries that would like to ban it.

While I would never eat dog meat myself, it's really no different than eating any other kind of meat. Hindus consider the cow to be sacred, but people still eat beef. Muslims consider alcohol and eating the meat of carnivores and omnivores as haram (unlawful), but people still consume alcohol and eat the flesh of many animals. Many people keep rabbits as domesticated pets, but there are those that also use rabbits as a food source. These people that eat animals that we would typically consider pets, they don't view these animals as pets or companions. They are bred and raised as "food animals", like cattle, sheep, fowl, etc.

The sale of dogs for meat and the treatment of them in China has been extensively documented.
