Jimmy Page was a member of The Yardbirds in its later years. When that group broke up, he went on to form another band called The New Yardbirds.. That name was changed to Led Zeppelin after Keith Moon made a comment about how successful he thought this group would become. He said that it would go over like a lead balloon. The name "Led Zeppelin was a play on that. The "a" in Led was dropped because of concerns that Americans would pronounce the name as "leed". Also, reportedly, the von Zeppelin family (very prominent in the development of dirigibles in the 1930s) wasn't too pleased with having their name used for a rock band.
