All the time. As my teen said "Save money on the basics so we can spend more on the *fun* stuff!"
For a while I got several lovely pieces of native American turquoise and silver jewelry, when they went out of fashion.
Most recently, we found we were short of shorts. We went to the thrift store and got: 8 shorts/skorts for one person, two skorts and a shirt for another, and a scarf for another. The total cost was $8, whoohoo!
I've gotten a lot of my pots, pans and kitchen utensils at thrift stores, too. By waiting and watching, I have a matching set of revere ware copper bottom pots an pans - with lids! The most I spend on one was $5 - including the lid.
They are also a great source for craft supplies, costumes and dress up.
And an absolute gift to parents of small children - kids grow so fast, some of the clothes look almost new!
The flannel sheets with penguins were a great find, too.

I buy pretty much all my clothes secondhand, ranging from the thrift stores to the pricier consignment stores.
I've gotten tons of great stuff, but I've never hit a financial jackpot like finding a $1,000 item for 10cents, but considering how long I've been doing this, I'm sure I've saved a bundle.
If I had to feed my shopping habit retail, I'd have to declare bankruptcy.
There's nothing like having new clothes every few weeks!

What I've been told by someone who does is that some of the clothing and things are new, never used. Some are highend stuff. Their merchadise comes from donations, and some businesses donate excess inventories to thrift stores.
I am aware of some professonals that shop at those stores.
It's unpredictable what the inventory will be each week.

Yes, once I found a really nice DKNY jacket that was for $1.25. I felt kind of bad, but only for a second. Like aren't thrift stores supposed to be for the less fortunate!?

No. But my friend got like 30 shirts for 5 dollars or something at an Army surplus store. They were those work shirts that have various names on them. He liked the one that said "Opy" on it.
