In Irish mythology, a leprechaun is a type of male faerie said to inhabit the island of Ireland. They are a class of "faerie folk" associated in Irish mythology and folklore. They usually take the form of old men who enjoy partaking in mischief. Their trade is that of a cobbler or shoemaker. They are said to be very rich, having many treasure crocks buried during war-time. According to legend, if anyone keeps an eye fixed upon one, he cannot escape, but the moment the eye is withdrawn he vanishes.

Since rainbows are known the world over and leprechauns are distinctly from the Emerald Isle, the guardianship of the rainbow gold falls not to the province of the Wee Folk.
Leprechauns are the diminutive shoemakers of the Faery Realm, and have their own king and provinces. If caught (which is rare to be sure) they can give wishes, or show the location of hidden treasures, but they are tricksy, cunning and often get the best of any bargain you may make with them. It is best to be on their good side, and courtesy, respect, small gifts and a bit of food left for them are appreciated.

Leprechauns are the cobblers of the Fairies dancing shoes. They are an awfully parsimonious group as a whole. Their faerie gold and coins the find here and about on the roads and paths of Eire get quickly and secretly buried. I do believe that the end of the rainbow is a put-off of the Leprechauns as a rainbow will quickly move away from you if your trying to get to its end, until it disappears into the sunlight.

my irish history is a little rusty but here go's.two of the earliest peoples to inhabit the island of ireland were at war,one was a rough warlike people, the other were skilled in the arts of medicine and fine jewelry etc.the warlike people won out in the end forcing the others to scatter throughout the island and live in hiding in forests and caves.over time this gave rise to the myth that if you caught one of these people they would take you to their gold or cure you of whatever ailment you suffered from. i myself am irish and wouldnt lie to you ,begorrah. dont know where the name leprechaun comes from tho.
