what's the difference between democrat and republican?

The basic difference between the two major political parties in the US is an economic one. Republicans tend to support businesses in order to inspire employment, which in turn supplies the ability to maintain a chosen lifestyle. Democrats tend to support workers who earn wages and support businesses by purchasing goods. Socially conservative goals are not necessarily an inherent part of the republican platform, nor are many of the 'liberal' goals normally associated with the democratic platform . The supposed 'moral' difference between the two is an artifact of the competition for votes. Individuals, and the behavior that defines them, are represented by both parties.
The actual 'goal' of each party is the same, the furtherance of America's (or North Central America for sticklers) interests both foreign and domestic. Sometimes the vocal subgroups within each party are allowed to define the whole. Of course, that will be confusing to a foreigner. Most US citizens are as confused as you may be. Why else would religious identity be important for a candidate in a nation where all men are considered to be created equal and where church shall be separate from the state?

Hi,

I've been American all my life....There used to be a difference between Democrats and Republicans---now, they are both gettin in everyone's face and the whole thing's about the almighty dollar.

I happen to be registered as an Independent Voter--I vote for people/issues--not down a party line. I don't believe that every state has that option (Independent).

One election, I voted for Libertarians and Greens--BIG mistake--that's how G. Dubya got into office--a lot of us did that.

All I want...is peace in this world--we are going to wind up blowing each other up--for what? I don't care who is in Congress, who is the President--as long as they can put all this nonsense to an end.

Nice to meet you, and I really hope that you don't think the politicians represent the American people--in most cases--that's soooo wrong. :)

I have plenty of solutions for you however I'll persist with only a few. You point out Milli Vanilli as though America lives by way of them. If you take into account, we condemed them. That is why you heard of them. The Partridge Family? OMG. Everyone is aware of it was once lip-syched. It was once a foolish blameless bubble-gum sitcom only for a laugh. The albums the Partridge Family offered obviously mentioned who the truly singers have been. (Like we particularly suggestion 6 12 months historical Tracy had the voice of a 30 12 months historical, NOT) Ok, possibly yet another. As others published, this can be a common factor. You name America hypocritical however you're no larger in minimizing this to only America. Lip synching is incorrect ONLY while the viewers is resulted in consider it is truly. When we watch floats in a parade, we would be dull to consider it is truly. Half the leisure is dancing. How are they gonna sing a tune respectable if they're out of breath???? Answer: lip-synching.

I don't know where your from, but after reading the responses that I've seen so far, do you get the feeling that people aren't happy with the government representation lately? We do need a change and thank God the American Constitution says that if the people feel the government is not working for the people, they have the right to abolish that government and form a new one that does work. Here's the kicker though....we can't even decide whether abortion should be decided by the mother of the child or not, nor whether or not we can have the 10 Commandments displayed in public....even worse....people think Pamela Anderson is still hot in this country.....how are we even going to agree on what kind of government is going to be good for us? So I guess we're doomed to deciding on which of the two parties is the lesser of two evils until something is done.

The Democrats are the party of BAD ideas...
The Republican party, is a party of NO ideas...
And the only thing worse than a Republican or a Democrat is when these two pricks work together.

The way it works is, the Democrat stands up in Congress says: "I got a really bad idea."
And the Republican says: "And I can make it shittier."

A Democrat BLOWS...A Republican SUCKS!

Not much anymore. Either party will say anything to get elected and win. I'm hoping a Republican will build the fence and stop the illegals. The Democrats said tonight they are not building a fence and each has some kind of amnesty plan. Both parties stink. We need a good viable third party that will be for the people (for a change).

As a Democrat I say that we actually want peace. We want to take care of our people here in the US and fix our problems here, then go to places in the world were we are really needed. We dont see the US as a "Christian State", but feel more like we should keep church and state separate as it was made in the first place. Now that doesn't mean we should be immoral. We should recognize good vs. evil and strive to do good. Most of us believe everyone should get free health-care since we are one of the richest countries in the world and because we are the.....well....United States.

Republicans....ugh. Not always bad. Dont always have the wrong answer. Are not always evil. They are more likely to be hypocritical as we have seen during the last 7 yrs. They are good with money. So good that, as President Bush put it, "Rich people dont pay taxes, we pay accountants." Which is exactly how Ken Lay of Enron stole soooooo much money from their hard working employees. Bush defended him. The Republicans say Democrats drag "good men's names through the mud" (Bush most recently: Alberto Gonzales) with all there facts and evidence and guilty pleas made by guilty people, but nevertheless they continue to deny it to the media therefore they are right and Democrats are wrong.....sigh....

You can go on and on.....both sides have nut jobs, both sides have intellectuals, but one thing neither has is.......?

The Republicans admit that they're a little bit evil, the Democrats are still trying to hide it.

what an absolutely FAB Q; I, as an American have so often wondered this very thing in embarrassed silence.

I think there is not one whoopdeeegoddammdedoo bit of difference between the two. and I DESPISE the hole idea of party ideology. You cannot ascribe socially idiollogical
stances to "democrat" or "republican" //// it is LUDICROUS to even try to do that. I cannot calmly discuss politics with anyone who believes they are a DEMOCRAT or a REPUBLICAN, both are ridiculous labels.

I'm afraid answers doesn't come with audio. But the democratic and republican parties stances and demographics have changed over time. Currently, the democrats are usually considered more liberal - they are more likely to be pro-abortion, environmentalists, pro-gay rights, pro-big government programs like universal healthcare and such. The Republicans are usually the opposite all that plus pro-national security. Although there are moderates in either party.
