Even though the words are similar, I would say that ego and alter-ego are not really equivalent concepts in meaning or weight. (we all have an ego but an 'alter ego' or alternate personality is not universal nor on the same playing field as ego) I don't see those concepts as being on opposite ends of a continuum. Yes we have to keep our ego in check, keep it from controlling all we do, but then again 'alter-ego' is not that balancing point. Some would suggest that an 'alter-ego' is a form of mental sickness (the concept evolved from study of schizophrenia) where others would simply say that it is fantasy (harmless and even healthy as long as it doesn't take over from reality). In any case, I don't think that the 'alter-ego' is going to keep the ego in check (it may even add to egocentricity). I would say that we need to keep our ego 'in balance' with humility, selflessness and compassion for others.

I do, two of them to be precise. But I keep more of a lid on it now, than what I did when I was younger, in grade school and high school.
One of them....I'm working with, slowly bringing him back into "me" so I feel more coherent. The other one....I rather have to surpress, as he's what comes out when I'm angry enough to actually *fight* and hurt folks.
But yeah, I used to switch gears between alters all the time, up into my early 20s, when there was just a *lot* of pressure from other people to stop it (not to mention pressure from "me" to not get into fights anymore and to avoid getting maimed any further).
It could all be worse though. ^_^ Really. The one who *has* some control isn't all that bad to be around. Just a little odd.
Thanks for your time. ^_^

Yes! When not being a superhero, I disguise myself as a 26 year old marketing exec named Katie. No one would ever suspect!
