im just curious to knwo if i am skimping too much or maybe even spending more then i need to, i give myself 100 dolers a month for grocerys and my girlfriend puts in 100 per month as well, it doesnt seem to come out quite enough but maybe we should try shopping smarter? we have been cooking more lately rather then buying so much pre-prepared type stuff and that seems to be making things WORSE as we are having to by so many different ingrediants but i am hopeing that once we get enough of that kinda crap stired up (spices and whatnot) that it will actually be cheaper to cook meals from scratch.....? i would appreciate your thoughts on this.

My husband and I spend $70 per week on groceries, and sometimes that's not enough! $50 per week sounds a little low, bit it depends on what you buy and where you shop. We go to the cheapest grocery store in the area!! And yes, once you get stocked up on spices and stuff, you'll find it's easier to prepare food from scratch instead of buying prepackaged stuff.

I spend about $100 a week for 2 people, but that includes everything that I buy at a supermarket. I put eating healthy food more important than cost, so I buy lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and and cook almost everything from scratch.. However cost comes second so I buy on sales and plan menus around the specials, especially on meat. I live in a city were food is relatively expensive, and when I visit a friend who live in farm country, the prices of many things seem to be much less.

Well, just doing the math, this doesn't seem very possible. Break that down into cost per meal. That's only about $1 per person, per meal (assuming that you eat 3 meals a day at home). Even if you only eat 2 meals a day, that's only $1.50 per meal.

I suppose if you lived off of peanut butter and jelly, potatos, pasta, and other 'staple' foods, you could manage. But, obviously, this is no fun. Don't forget that what you put into your body has a direct effect on your health and performance at work, among other things. I wouldn't suggest short-changing your nutrition. If money is tight, find another place to cut the budget...

$150 per person per month is a good rule of thumb if you're trying to watch your money.

A good way to save a whooole lot of money is to buy a few staples in bulk. You can buy 50 lbs of rice for $25 at an Asian market, and also get really good prices on buying dried beans in bulk. Serving black beans and rice with each meal only costs about 50 cents, which will save you a lot of money (and is delicious). Just make sure you read about how to prepare the beans online.

Frozen chicken can be bought for less than three dollars a pound and tastes just fine. Going to a real butcher instead of a grocery store also cuts down on costs.

The main spices you need to cook good food are garlic salt, a pepper GRINDER, cayenne pepper, turmeric and a few other things, depending on what kinds of foods you like.

Spaghetti is dirt cheap, and if you can learn to make a good meat sauce (with sausage, not ground beef) then you're on easy street. Use a bit of red wine, drink the rest.

Of course, the easiest way to save cash is TOP RAMEN. Have lunch for 16 cents.

Good luck.

I shop for myself, fiance and our 3 daughters... we spend about $150 every other week.

so $200/month for 2 people doesn't seem to be too far of a stretch.
but at the same time... we buy alot of pasta, ground beef, hamburger/chicken helper.
just really depends on what you're buying at the store... if you're buying 12oz T-bones and boneless/skinless chicken, then yeah, you're gonna kick out some cash...so just price compare when you're at the store.

also, try clipping coupons from the paper, at the store or wherever you get 'em from... alot of stores automatically print coupons for the stuff you get on the back of your receipt. so save your receipts for the next time you go grocery shopping.

another thing you can do is try shopping at different grocery stores(if available)... alot of times something that's $5.00 at Store A will cost $4.00 at Store B... yeah, $1 isn't much and probly not even worth the effort, but it'll add up if you're spending $200/month.

Well, I spend right at 700.00 a month (sometimes more) on groceries for a family of 4, but that also includes dog food and paper towels and make up, or whatever else like detergents and stuff. I would LOVE to spend 200.00 a month on groceries. I think ya'll are doing great! And your right, when you are stocking up on things you only have to buy every once in a while, it is more expensive....but worth it!

WOW!!! I drop at least 250-300 dollars a month, I'm not spoiled, i spend my own, but i love to be stocked up, and i eat!!!! 100?? that's it?? aren't you guys hungry?? ha ha jk, no but i live in Cali so everything is more expensive here. and I only buy organic. but a great solution to your prob, would be to grow your own garden!! fruits and veggies!!its not time now, but in late winter you can plant for spring, and it will save you some cash! Its yummiest when you grow yourself anyways... go down to the nursery and get you some stuff!

I don't know where you live, but I wish I could live on $100 per month for food.
I live in New Zealand and my food for one is at least $60.00 per week.
My brother also for one spends $60.00-$80.00 per week.
So you are doing ok.
Depends you may eat out, so its all relative

$100 is just enough for a family grocery needs. but if u are pertaining just for one person, I don't think so.. thats is too much! I guess you need to minimize your grocery needs. just for u to save the money. Instead you donate it to some orphanage!
