You forgot? How many reminders did the state send you that weren't enough to jog your memory?

Depending on the state you may be able to propose a payment agreement. Some others will simply refuse to budge.

If you forgot to file a tax return and the state did it for you, getting that done right may get you some relief.

Francisco,

You asked a question that no one can answer with any certainty. The United States is a republic made up of 50 different and separate states. Unless the US government passes a law that establishes a standard for all states, each is free to set their own policies in sales and income taxes.

The more info you can provide, the likelier you are to receive advice that is worth something. I could post an accurate response dealing with Louisiana taxes, and it could be 100% worthless for you and your situation.

I hope you can resolve the problem, so you can move forward with your life and put this behind you.

Well, you could like pay the whole amount that you owe, then they'd like end the garnishment.

The IRS doesn't have anything to do with state taxes, so contacting them like one responder suggested won't do anything. You could call the state tax department and see if they have any suggestions. But by the time they garnished your wages, you had to have not just "forgotten" to pay your state taxes, but ignored several communications from them.

Your best option is to contact the IRS. While the deadline to file an extension is well past, you can avoid any further fees (besides the ones that have no doubt been incurred already) by negotiating a payment arrangement.
