Why is it necessary to add a boiling chip or two during the distillation of a liquid?

It reduces the size of bubbles and the turbulence associated with their formation. This keeps liquid from being forced out of the distillation section and the potential for ruptures in the line. BTW: They work well at home for making hard-boiled eggs.
