I had my third child December 3rd of last year. I got on Depo in the middle of January. About a week after my shot I started my period. I got a second shot 11 or 12 weeks later. I have been on my period the entire time with only about three weeks total when I have had a break from it. That's 8ish months. What is the deal? I used to have very regular periods, 4-6 days and a 28 day cycle, like clockwork. I'm tired, drained and depressed. Other then that... I'm great! :) Trying to keep a good attitude, but I need some help.

The Depo injection should be banned!! I had one when I got married because I was ALWAYS having chronic, heavy periods and didn't want to have to deal with that on our honeymoon. It took a week or so for things to stop--and it went along successfully for nearly 4 or 5 months...by my God when it started back up again!! I could not STOP bleeding. I lost so much blood and became so anemic that I missed a month of work, and could not climb the 2 flights of stairs to get up to our 3rd floor apartment at the time. I was literally a "shut in" at the mercy of everyone else helping me. I got very, very ill from the end results of that mess and all that bleeding and anemia will make you depressed (not to mention, very drained and exponentially exhausted).

My periods were never normal again. I got cervical cancer 6 months later, and then uterine cancer 4 years later and nearly bled out (to death). I think that DP shot really did me in--it made things in my "female" life simply unbearable.

I'm sorry, I am not trying to scare you...I can just relate to what you're going through (and every woman is different). My doctor had to put me on a little, black, diamond-shaped pill to stop the bleeding (Provera, I think). It did work, and I had to follow a regimen of iron supplements and a diet of iron rich foods. This may also help with the depression (I always have that!). It takes time, but you will feel better...just see your gyn or family doc--make sure they listen to you(!).

p.s. Never had the chance to have kids...so I don't know how your pregnancies might have an effect with this.

I was on Depo for over a year, and I bled most of that time. I also gained a lot of weight, and felt depressed. My right hip where it was always injected used to bother me, but it is getting better. I learned after a year that the technicians had been injecting me in the wrong spot the whole time. I wonder if that is why my hip hurt.

Also, Depo causes bone density loss, and I was not crazy about the idea of hastening the odds of an old-age broken hip.

If I had the option, I would get an IUD without the chemical component. I am on the pill now (Tri Cyclen Lo) but I would prefer a non-hormonal method. I am not permitted to get an IUD until I have had a child, due to the fact it might be expelled by an "inexperienced" uterus, and also the small risk of scarring or sterility.

Good luck to you, and I hope this helps. :)

I was on depo provera for a few years and didn't bleed at all the whole time. But, I had a friend who didn't stop bleeding...so she had to get off....i just didn't like the break outs and weight gain I started to have after the first year or so....so I got off.

Its normal. Some bleed for months, some don't bleed at all, some have a regular period.

IMO I'd get OFF this shot ASAP. Too many women have too many horrible health risking side affects and issues that I'm appalled its still being administered.

Check out the reviews at http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-control-methods.aspx and google "depo provera lawsuit".

It's a hormone thing..I was on Depo for "one shot" worth..it screwed up my whole cycle..i had breakthrough bleeding through the whole thing. Talk to your doctor about it and whether or not you should think about changing birth control methods. Good luck.

This is a common side effect of depo. You need to get off the drug as your body obviously cannot tolerate it. The side effects of depo are nasty and it is not a drug I would ever recommned to someone and I am a nurse.
