The atomic mass of element X is 33.42 amu. A 28.09 g sample of X combines with 85.30 g of another element Y to form a compound XY. Calculate the atomic mass of Y.

If one atom of X combines with 1 atom of Y, then their atomic mass will be proportional 1:1. So set the ratio for X = Y

33.42 / 28.09 = Y / 85.30

Solve for Y
