Minerals are mostly compounds, but there are some elemental minerals. A good example of diamond: it is composed of carbon and its chemical formula is C. Quartz is a compound composed of silicon and oxygen, and its chemical formula is SiO2. Diamond is an mineral element and quartz is a mineral compound.
