Totally depends on your child. My sister-in-law gave her daughter cheerios at about 6 months because she already had a few teeth. I just started to give my one year old cheerios (even though she had Puffs at 7 months) because she didn't get any teeth until a week ago. So, if your child has teeth and is reaching for food then you could try a cheerio or two. Just when you start finger foods give them only a few. My daughter grabbed many more than she could possibly chew at first, so you have really be careful at first.

As soon as they can eat solids, which is anytime after 6 months (any earlier is risking their health, it has been official advice to not give any solids until 6 months for the past 5 years in the UK, puts them at risk of allergies, strain on the kidneys, obesity later on...etc).
They call it baby led weaning. In fact it's just common sense. If a baby can sit unaided and feed themselves they are ready for food like the rest of us. As long as it's unprocessed, no added salt it should be fine to give them it. If you have allergies in the family it's best to avoid the common culprits like dairy and wheat for a good year or so.
Popular first foods in my house are sweet potato wedges, roast parsnips, broccoli trees...etc Easy to hold and gnaw on. No need to puree or much anything ever, no spoons required until they want to use one themselves. Mine are using cutlery by 1.

It is different for each child. One of mine was at 6 months and the other was a year old...(he doesn't believe in chewing just swallowing whole) Normally when they have a couple of teeth and will chew real good.

Puffs are good for babies over 4 months that have teeth. Gerber makes them and they dissolve while baby is eating them. Hope this helps!

At different ages, depending on each of my children. I waited until they began to reach for things.
