They basically mean the same thing - approval for a question vs approval for an answer but they get no points except when a thumbs up is coupled with a best answer. Good thing a thumbs down doesn't take points away

you only get a point from the thumbs up if your answer gets chosen as best
or lots of thumbs up & stars give you bragging rights

doesn't it feel great when u receive an e-mail saying u were chosen as the best answer???
or when you review a question you answered and saw a thumbs-up?

thumbs up = a person likes an answer
star = a person likes a question
