I have a story I want to turn into a movie. Should I write the story and then the script, or just write the script and send it in?

This is one of the writers' community's best kept secrets. A free online screenwriting course put together by a UCLA Screenwriting Professor. It will help you tremendously. Pax- C

Start by getting the program FINAL DRAFT. You can also get a DVD lecture on writing scripts from the same people. Go through the FINAL DRAFT tutorial.

Look at scripts that are posted on the web. Pick up published scripts when you can. I recently found the I, Robot script written by Harlan Ellison. This is NOT the script for the movie, but one that was rejected in the first stages. It's a good one to look at for the mechanics of how a script should look and scene directions, etc. Harlan knows how to write a script and is really good at teaching mechanics.
