Democrats DO have the votes to stop the war. They are the majority, and a majority is needed to pass the funding bill.

They can't stop the war,and don't really think the want to at this time. The want to keep American jumping from one problem to another. They can't even get along. We can spend billions of dollars on the war billions helping Mexico but can't help the young and old here. How many kids of congress is over their on the front. If their kids where their; then I bet this war would be won by now

Problem is people (the average Jane and Joe) will often act and speak based upon emotion rather then logic. They'll listen to opinions and decide then and there what is right and what is wrong. When you enter into global politics such behavior is detrimental and will only cause more harm then good. There is a reason the public cannot immediately command a pullout in a military situation.
Sorry, but thats the truth.

The problem isn't the Democrats--its the Republicans. Bush is going to veto any bill that requires withdrawal. If the Democrats refuse to give him the funds--he'll simply leave oru troops exposed without adequate support.

So--in order to force a withdrawal, the Democrats have to be able to overrride a veto. There are enough Republicans against the war to do that--but they are not yet willing to stand up to the right-wing and Bush--not yet, anyway. So what is the choice? On the one hand, keep pushing, eroding Bush's support until the GOP grows some bplls--or, on the other, ssacrice the welfare of our soldiers. Unless and until the Republicans are wiling to stand up and be counted--its not much of a choice.

Democrats are notorious for *not* listening to the people.

The people of Alaska have wanted to open ANWR for years, and the Dems constantly block it, leaving us yet more dependent on the federal dollar.

Want an exercise in frustration and futility? Try living in a state with natural resources out the ears, but having more than 99% of your land locked up against development and being stuck needing pork projects just so the people survive. Then come talk to me about politicians listening to the people.

The democrats, being every bit as faithful lackeys to their corporate masters as the Republicans have ever been, will do as they are told and continue this war because it's good for all those big defense contractors and other corporate sponsors of this illegal occupation.

Both parties are completely spineless cowards when it comes to actually doing anything good for the nation, much less doing anything the people actually want.

They will vote with Bush. They are too chicken to actually take a stand. They lost their spine long ago. I wish I was wrong here, but it seems to be their mode of operation these days.
I find it interesting that Petreaus has lied many times before about the so called successes in Iraq. Once before the 2004 elections, again before the 2006 elections and now this month (2007). Bush has lied continuously about the war since it's beginning. And, now we have the Dems saying one thing to the American people (the majority of whom want out of this war now), and yet voting in favor of Bush's policies since they took office at the beginning of this year. I realize alot of the Dems who are voting with Bush are southern blue dog democrats, but it leaves me wondering if we really have any kind of opposition party at all in this country. I don't think we really do.
I also wonder how much money is being allocated to 180,000 private contractors and private militia for the Republican party over there. We all know that Blackwater is a private militia being funded with our tax dollars for the benefit of the GOP who are the only ones that support blackwater. And, the GOP is the only party supported by Blackwater because it is a racist and right wing extremist Christian organization. How much of our tax dollars are going to this group? Where's the missing 9 to 10 billion dollars stolen from the treasury by this administration and sent to Iraq?

BTW, for those of you still thinking this war is about terrorism need to read a newspaper and get your head out of Fox television. This war is about oil and regional control and American empire. Even Greenspan recognized that in his latest book.

Its politics, not yes or no. The president will veto any legislation to provide less than the necessary funding and the Demon-crats don't have 60 votes to override. No one is going to shut down the whole federal government to get their way. That would mean no Social Security, Homeland Security, The troops throughout the world would not even have food to eat or gas to get home.

It may be exciting to threaten it but it will never happen.

It's not up to the politicians- the Armed Forces decide. Haven't you studied the past? Generals blackmail presidents to get funding- no war = no military = no money! If they can't have the war on terror they'll have to find another battle! It's not about democracy- it's about bullying the rest of the world like its done for ages!

Hopefully, they have done their homework. Defunding the troops in Iraq is simply a very bad idea. Judging from their most recent actions, I suspect that even the democrats know this.
There is a strong contingent in this country that realize that a victory in Iraq is our only option if we are to stem this ideology of hatred and domination. Do not believe all you read and hear in the media - talk to people and you will find that the published 70% and sometimes higher opposition to this war is not a real number - I can guarantee you that 7 out of 10 people that I talk to are not too keen on a defeat for America in Iraq.

Just say no only works in fictional drug "education" videos. This is the "real world." Politicians invariably inhabit this fictionalized world where they can't do anything because they have to deal with "real world" issues (ie cowardice and pandering for votes).
