8-3( p-4) = 2p
i got 7.3
what i did was do
8-3p-12=2p
3p-20=2p
then i added 20 to 2p and got 22
then divided it by 3p so i got 7.3 is that right??

There are several mistakes.

When you multiplied out the brackets, you got one of the signs wrong:
-3(p-4) = -3(p) + (-3)(-4) = -3p + 12. So we have
8 - 3p + 12 = 2p
Then, in your next line, you added 8 and -12 and got -20. You should have gotten -4. Also, you dropped the minus sign in front of the 3.
Finally, 20 + 2p is not 22 unless p = 1. You can't just drop the p.

The correct way to solve this problem is as follows:
8 - 3(p-4) = 2p
=> 8 - 3p + 12 = 2p
=> -3p + 20 = 2p
=> -3p - 2p = -20
=> -5p = -20
=> p = -20 / -5 = 4.

it shld be,
8-3p+12=2p < -ve multiply by -ve = +ve
20=5p
p=4
