well.... there seems to be a demand for 2 items which Europeans dont have

there is a new drink we call tea
and a new fad one of our colleagues learned how to do.
It seems they grind up a dried kind of weed and put it in pipes and light fire to it and puff on the smoke from this weed
we call it tobacco

but there is a big demand for these items and it take so long to sail around the African coast that there just has to be a quicker way to go get it.

I think by sailing west since the world is round we can get there in 2 months and it would save so much time

The thing is everyone sails along the coastline for fear of getting lost. But the whale boats go beyond sight of the coast all the time. i dont see why we cant do it

I just need some funding for some ships

Many people want to learn more about it. Others are interested in, well, shopping if you will. Spices, silk, and other rarities can be found there, and right now, the only way to get them is to go by land, and, since the Turk took Constantinople prices have gone up. Shoppers are always looking for bargains, and the ones who can supply them with the same quality goods for the lowest price will be their merchant of choice.

The question would be better if Columbus were asked, "Why should our government spend the money to back you wild eyed idea that you could GET to Asia by going West? Isn't that like throwing money away? You might as well plan to go to the moon. What kind of return would we taxpayers expect for our investment?"
