My pessimistic voice: Read the texts assigned to you, and answer accordingly. This is probably your best chance for a higher grade.
My optimistic voice: I have an idea which might explain some things for which we currently have no explanation. So I tell people what I'm thinking. I might even give it a name. I begin a dialog with other thinking people. They might support my idea, or they might show me where it's wrong. If I'm a scientist, I don't care which, I just want to arrive at the truth. If the scientific community takes my idea seriously, studies it, and follows it to its logical conclusions, and doesn't find any serious problems, then we collectively consider it a theory.
Most Big Bang ideas would qualify now as theory. In my own personal opionion, all of current Superstring and M-brane work qualifies as conjecture, but does not yet qualify as theory. Others who follow it more closely, with a stronger mathematical background, may disagree with me.
Alas, your respect for the English language leads me to conclude that the pessimistic voice is the right one for you. Did you consider for even a moment that even one person with intellectual credentials might be reading these questions and trying to answer them? And perhaps their answer might make a difference in your life?

In science a hypothesis is the guess as to what an observation means. The hyptohesis is stated in such a way that it can be tested by experimentation.
If a hypotheses withstands lots of testing it becomes a theory. A theory is a statement that is always true. Or it fails to be a theory.

A hypothesis is an if....then question. Such as; " IF male and female brains differ is intrinsic construction, THEN we should see a difference in behavior.
A theory is an overarching explanation of a group of valid hypothesis; as explanation of how, or why the phenomenon observed works. Its mechanism.

A theory is logical assumption based on limited information or knowledge.
A Hypothesis is a entative explanation that accounts for a set of facts and can be tested by further investigation
(Though in the definition of Hypothesis says that it can be summed up with Theory....so theres no big difference at all)

A theory is an idea of how a thing works.
A hypothesis is a plan to test the theory:
"If the theory is so then if we do this test,
we can expect to see that result."
