Mia is counting pond life animals.In two hours she counted 4 more frogs then turtles.The number of crayfish she counted was 3 more than twice the number of turtles.She counted 75 pond animals all together.How much of each did she count.

Establish variables:

T = # of turtles counted
F = # of frogs counted
C = # of crayfish counted

You have 3 unknowns, so you need 3 equations to solve....

1. F = T + 4
2. C = 2T+ 3
3. T + F + C = 75

Get 3rd eqn. in terms of 1 variable (in this case, t) and solve:

T + (T + 4) + (2T + 3) = 75
4T + 7 = 75
4T = 68

T = 17 turtles
F = 21 frogs
C = 37 crayfish
