No you'r not supposed to, but it's nice to do so. They don't make much and are working this job because maybe that's the only one they are qualified to do. I always tip them. Look at it this way, you never have to leave your car, (this is convient for you) you get what you want without having to make a trip into a place where you can't find a parking place. Even though they only have to walk a short way, they are doing you a service. Respect them and reward them.

I have more often than not NOT tipped them, they dont make a whole lot of money in tips per day and I can guarantee that they dont count on it to support their families. If you get exceptional service, a friendly carhop or fast delivery then you should tip and tip well. Otherwise I wouldnt feel bad about it, its not necessary. Heres some rules of thumb about tipping: Tip These people: Waiters-15-20% Hair dressers-10% Baristas (The girl who makes your coffee at starbucks)use your judgment, if you order something really complicated, throw in more but generally 50 cents is good. Valets a dollar or so Any person who carts your luggage (be it in a hotel or airport)- A dollar or so Hosts/hostesess- you dont have to tip them but if they give you a really good table i would. Cab drivers- 10% The general idea is that if someone provides you a service you tip them. These people dont make a whole lot of money and your tips make up for that gap. I make about 20 dollars a day in tips at starbucks and they are split between 7 other people! So thats 140 dollars that people give into the tip jar per 8 hour period. I have to laugh if someone orders something that is ridiculously complicated and they throw in 2 pennies REALLY hard so it makes a lot of noise ROFL Thats all I can think of for now.

I always tip about 15% at Sonic $1 on $5 burger combo. These people saying $2 or $3 must work there! Maybe if the total bill is $15-$20.

YES! Although you would not tip as much as you do in a normal restaurant you are not standing at a counter and carrying the food to your seat like at McDonald's. THEY bring the food out to you, they get your condiments and are more than willing to go back in to get whatever you need and you can call them back out if you need anything else. If we only get a drink or two we leave a buck or a decent amount of change as the tip. If we get meals we leave at least 2 or 3 dollars, depending on how much we spend and how friendly the order presenter is makes a difference. Sonice says this about its people...
Carhops
Personal Carhop service is one of many reasons customers enjoy visiting SONIC. Frequently seen spinning by on roller skates, smiling Carhops personally deliver orders right to customers' car. What's more, Carhops check back to ensure a quality experience.

I think that's worth a small tip and they have ALWAYS thanked us for it.

To all the people that say yes because they bring it to my car. It is not my fault they don't have a drive through. I would be more than happy to go through the drive through like one of our newest Sonic's have. It used to be yiu tip because they left the tray on your window and at some point they came back to grab your trash. Well it isn't like that anymore. So I don't understand why we have to tip. I try to tip because I feel obligated but it is crap.

Yes, I do tip at Sonic. They are similiar to a waitress because they are bringing the item to your car. I tip a dollar for a meal and if I get a large order, I'll tip $2.00. I usually don't tip for a soda.

You don't have to, but it is appreciated. Yes, it is "their job" to bring food to you..... it is a car hop/ drive in style restaurant. They bring the food out, bring you extra condiments napkins if you need them, and even give ya free refills (just ask). Most people that work there are students trying to pay their way through school. Like I said, you don't have to tip, and I am sure they do not get many tips.... but I give them a few bucks and a thank you with a smile. I am sure they appreciate it.

You should tip anyone who does a service for you. If you were a tipping-oriented person you would know that in your gut and never have to feel bad.
