I really would like to get a north face coat for this winter. I'm away at college in northern IL and it gets really cold and windy during the winter. I was thinking about the redpoint jacket but someone I know said it looked thin and that most of the womens jackets looked very thin. What is the best north face coat I can get for these weather conditions without spending much more than $200?

Wow, this is a tough one with your price limit if you want to stick with NF. If you were going to be in a place with a bit milder climate, it would be an easier choice, but in northern Illinois in winter, you should be prepared for some major cold, wind and snow.

My recommendations:

Nuptse Jacket ($199): skip it, way too granola looking

Transit Jacket ($229): skip it, sort of goofy look to it

Triclimate Jackets (all): skip them, not warm enough unless you want to always do some serious layering every time you go out in winter.

Redpoint Jacket ($149): Yea, a little short on insulation so here again you will need to layer up. An attractive price. Lacks a hood, which can be very useful on occasions. Consider the next two.

Nebula Jacket ($249): A good choice, although a bit above your price point. If you can manage the expense, go with this one. It will provide all the cold/wind protection you need without sacrificing style.

Gotham Jacket ($199): Another good choice. It doesn't have the technical specs of the Nebula or other pricier models, but it should do an acceptable job in the warmth department, and its right at your price point.

Let us know what you decide!

Get one that shows the names of Kevlar and Gor Tex on the lable, they are the best repellent and can keep the cold out.
