YES the are both dual cores. BUT Core2 Duo is new technology that processes more instructions per clock cycle at lower wattage and moderate Ghz.
In benchmarks below, even the 3.73Ghz Pentium D965 (130watts) bites the dust and can't catch up with a 2.4Ghz E6600 (65 watts!)

Here, even the budget Core2 Duos beat the high Ghz Pentium Ds:

Yes, they are both dual-core, but the difference is in the chip architecture. Core 2 Duo's architecture is the latest generation, whereas Pentium is an aging technology. Therefore, even if the clock speed were the same, the performance of the Core 2 Duo is far superior to the Pentium, any Pentium.
The Celeron is just a low-cost version of Pentium, so depending on the version, it's roughly the same.

The Pentium D with dual core technology was Intel's first dual core processor, based on the Pentium 4, and was released in 2005 to get Intel back into competition with AMD, which at the time had the best performing dual core technology with the Athlon 64 X2. After that, Intel quickly released the Core Duo architecture, followed by the Core 2 Duo, both of which were significant updates of the Pentium M architecture used in laptops, and adopted by Intel as the basis of its "Core" platform for desktops and notebooks.

Core 2 Duo uses less power and produces less heat, at the same time working substancially faster. A 1.8 Ghz Core2 can outperform a 2.8 Ghz PentiumD

Core 2 duo is faster. Yes, both are duo core, but it's like comparing a ferarri to a toyota.. yes, both are cars, but the quality/speed difference is evident.. maybe not to that scale, but the core 2 is definitely better.
