Others are Janis Joplin, Brian Jones and Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon.
My guess as to why would be that by the time they reach 27, most of them have had a good ten years of drug/alcohol addiction and finally something has to give. Sadly, in these cases it's their lives.

Janis Joplin.
Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones.
There are a couple more that are less known or weren't rock stars, for example guitar legend Robert Johnson, a bluesman.

Drugs? Drowing in fame and their fabulous talent? I don't know. Long Live them all (but especially Kurt Cobain, he has changed my whole entire life).

I don;t think everything is abotu drugs. I think they die because they get so depressed from all the pressure of being famous
