My best friend is a guy. Years ago, when we had just graduated, he thought we should be more. He wrote me a long beautiful letter and I cried for two days before telling him that friends was all we would ever be.
He didn't talk to me much over the next six months, then he got a girlfriend and things between us went back to normal.
When I got married, my husband was jealous of my relationship with my best friend. It made it hard on us for awhile. After a few years my hubby realized how important our friendship is and things got much better.
Friendship for us has definately had its tough spots, but I would not trade our friendship for anything in the world. He is my reference for all things "male" and since we've known each other since we were kids, he knows me well enough to be brutally honest when I really need it!
So don't give up on a friendship, just because it might be difficult. True friends are few and far between whether they are the same or the opposite sex, and you should always hold on to the good ones.

Do you have friends of both sexes? Yes I do. Do you find you have a different friendship with friends of the same sex than you do with friends of the opposite sex? I find my friendships each take on their own dynamic, so they're all different. Do you find you are more "yourself" or more "comfortable" around same sex friends or different sex friends? I could not make a distinction based upon gender, but there are individual differences, definitely some friends with whom I am more open than others. Do you think it works or not? Can you REALLY have opposite sex friends and there NEVER be any elements of "sexual chemistry"? Yes, sexual chemistry isn't necessarily a component of a m/f friendship. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't. Do you think it makes any difference if you have brothers AND sisters as to who's company you prefer? Not really, but then I am more inclined to have different thoughts about the factors at play in each individual friendship, and not likely to make sweeping generalisations about friends on the basis of gender. I had a brother and no sisters, my relationship with my brother was not a good one though because he has schizophrenia, but the lack of normal sibling relationships in my life didn't seem to impact upon my choice of friends, although come to think of it, maybe it does inform my lifelong love of solitude. I did always wish for a real brother or a big sister when I was a child though!

Best friends, are people who treat you like a brother or sister. They stand beside you through thick or thin. They are quick to tell you when you are wrong, and quicker to tell you when you are right. Distance doesn't strain the relationship nor does time. They are there for you when your relatives are not. Best friends come to your aid at the drop of a hat. Best friends are for life. Same sex or not, girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, or wives do not come between best friends. It is a bond formed out of love. And if your boyfriend or girlfriend cannot understand that, then he or she has never had a best friend and will not make it to be husband or wife.

The opposite sex. But not really because we were boyfriend and girlfriend at first and well we just got too close and it's hard to throw away somebody after you have already been through a lot together (we were together for over a year) so we keep eachother close and we're bff's :) We know every little thing about eachother and we can talk about anything at all, regardless of our gender. I love him.
