Some years back, a note that said "The torch shall be passed, Edgar" appeared with the rose and champagne, indicating that a new Poe Toaster was coming into action. Sure enough, the tourists that now annually gather outside the cemetery noted that the new Toaster was taller and larger tan the one that had been in action for over 15 years.

Edgar Allen Poe was an alcoholic but that wasn't the reason he died it was because of rabies. His father abandoned him and his family when he was young leaving his mother who was a famous actress at the time. After his mother's death he lived with his relatives who were rich but he left them because he fought with them too much. His most famous poem was The Raven which is about the a man's loss of his love when he tries to forget about it but can't because a raven keeps on reminding him. But sadly he got only a few money for it. He married his own cousin or was it niece? She died and he was suppose to marry another girl but then he died saying his last words which were Lord please help my pour soul.

An account appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association a few years ago by a New York doctor who read Poe's hospitalization record. He read it as a part of a diagnosis contest, in which every doctor got a medical history with the name blacked out. He wrote that as he read the record, he was struck by the absence of any tests that he himself would have ordered (Poe died about 1850). And as he read, he was struck by the symptoms, which seemed to be rabies.

A few years ago, I read that he may have died of rabies. Before that, they thought he died of alcoholism.
I visited his house in Baltimore. It's quite tiny, but fascinating to picture him sitting at the desk writing his stories.
