Use this thread to let out a stereotype that you knowingly hold about a particular group. Give support for your stereotype.

I will start.

Asian immigrant women tend to be extremely bad drivers. In the past year, I've nearly crashed my car at least three times because they don't seem to have any idea what they're doing. It seems as though they drive so defensively that they endanger the lives of everyone around them.

[Note: I am a master's student in social work. I have studied the negative effects of stereotypes and overgeneralizations. I still think it's important to be able to vent about group tendencies that we notice which are bothersome to us, because I nearly died today due to another horrible female Asian driver.]

loblg88 -- So you're convinced I'm white, huh? And you're convinced it's the white people that are asking questions you find dumb? Sounds like even you fall into this trap from time to time. Keep yourself in check. I also used the words "tend to," "seem," and brought up personal experience.

kelly4u2 -- We aren't what we study. We're people. I'm sensitive to recognize stereotypes, but I'm realistic to understand that we all have our own. Just like priests DO think about sex. Justifying stereotypes is not what I'm doing here. Recognizing them and being open about it IS what I'm doing.

Jon -- How noble of you. You did point something out though. I didn't share a stereotype. I shared a generalization.

I hate all stereotypes: They are highly imprecise, and offensive when one can't honestly know who is who.

I don't discriminate: I hate stereotypes about fat people, thin people (What if the fat people in question interpreted you as being a bigot because you think "Loosing" weight is that simple Gazzagirl? Have you ever heard of "Starvation mode?"), black, white, gay, straight, and any other parameter. It doesn't matter how partially true they are or not: You can't sit and prejudge someone when you honestly don't know anything about them. If there's one exception to the rule: That's one chance where you can really piss someone off.

My only exception to the rule of this is comedy that is based around stereotyping every single group equally. That's actually funny when every party is involved. If you can make fun of your peers, you should also be able to make fun of yourself. There's no reason to pick and choose.

As for problems: I wouldn't attribute her race and gender to her driving: I'd just be mad at her for being a horrible driver.

I love you. You're great.

Stereo types are stereo types because they're (at least partially) true, and that's why we all understand them.

People should learn to LAUGH at themselves more.

OK. So now I have to give you my stereotype situation.

FAT PEOPLE AND DIETS: Whenever I hear a person talk about loosing weight and going on a diet, the first thing they ALWAYS ask or talk about is what they ARE GOING TO EAT. How about NOT eating?

Oh, and I totally know what you mean about the Asian female drivers.

I don't know if I really agree with this post. I'm majoring in Sociology, and I think that stereotypes only lead to hurt and racist thoughts. If I were a female Asian driver, I would be offended by your post. Sorry. I just don't like this idea.

Social work is very different from sociology. I am a graduate student in sociology and I would never try to justify stereotypes!
