how did the standard Oil Company and the robber Barons change the u.s. history....?

i know what they are.. i just can"t figure out how they changed the history over the years.....

wow, the first thing that comes to my mind is they had a lot of greed, they wanted it all for themselves rather than the first people in US wanted to work more as a community. Also, the Oil Co. just took over as our population because so dependent on the mobility of the car, it let people be able to get jobs to commute to and also many products, including ice cream have petroleum products in them if you don't believe me, let a bowl of ice cream sit out and see if it melts into cream or a blob ???
