Bipolar disorder is a terrible disease. It cannot be spread because it is a chronic illness. It is when a person is not totally right in the head. At times they will be REALLY happy and go on a no sleeping and just recklessly spending cash etc. surge for about 3 days. Then, they will be REALLY depressed and sad for about 2-3 days. During this time they will mostly just sleep and sometimes not even eat anything. For more info, look at the site below.

i have bipolar disorder. its more commonly called manic-depression. you have mood swings basically, but not like pms yeah. when you are manic you are usually either very angry and aggitated or you could be happy "on top of the world" euphoric. then there is the depression, obviously hopelessness, extreme sadness. there are also points in bipolar disorder like mine where when you are at the extremes its psychotic. schizophrenic symptoms can occur (hearing seeing smelling things that arent real.) also dissoctiative disorder is common with this. this is missing blocks of time, more than simply forgetting. it can go into DID, and many other disorders. any other questions, feel free to email me phxfly311@yahoo.com----medication also helps a great deal.

I can't really add anything here, because several people above (aside of lambchop, who doesn't know what the heck she is talking about) have expressed it great and provide excellent links. I will add that I live with a bi-polar woman and can attest to the reality of this serious mental disease, and to the fact that although it is not curable, it is definitely manageable. With proper care, therapy, and medication a bi-polar can live a normal life and have a great marriage. My wife and I are living proof. Whether or not you are the one who might have it, or you are wondering because of someone you know, you are doing the right thing. Educating yourself on the problem is the #1 thing you can do to combat it, along with making sure you or the person you care about gets proper treatment. Good luck!

Bipolar is the same thing as manic-depression. Watch next Thursday's Oprah. You'll see some good examples, because that's what the show will be about. It will be a continuation of Monday's show.

Bipolar is basically the name for Manic Depression. It's a really serious illness and should be taken seriously as a result. But it can be treated, and people with this illness can live normal, healthy and happy lives.

I'ts really important you research properly. And be supportive for whoever it is (or maybe it is you) affected by the illness.

my husbands family has it so i believe it can be heriditary. basicly it is a depression where a person has highs and lows (emotions). they usually have an addiction they feed off of. for example aunt shops like crazy, HSN on speed dial. but the shopping gives her a high and then she gets depresed. she doesnt even open most boxes she gets. she has rooms full of unopened boxes and cannot control her spending. another addiction can be eating, hobbies, religion, gambling, drugs.ect. they obsess because in the moment it feels good. it is a serious true depression that needs to be regulated.
