Be careful. If you turn in plagiarized work and get caught you will get an "F".

Read the 1st three chapters and analyze them carefully. The entire book is always set up in the beginning. List unresolved items about the characters and conflict.

The read the rest of the book to answer those questions.

They all go like this set-up, rising - action, climax, falling action and resolution.

John Stienbeck in "The Grapes of Wrath" describes things in a manner I thought he was a painter. He didn't paint with paint he painted with words.

I helped a girl with a paper on "The Scarlet Letter" and because a footnote referenced Cliff's Notes she made a "D".
If she hadn't used Cliff's notes she would have made an "A".

I know you're joking about the whole essay part. Here's a tip about writing a thesis. Make sure you include a subject and an opinion. It's not enough to merely restate the obvious, or summarize the plot, or say "It was a good book." You have to look at some aspect of Steinbeck's novel-- character, tone, diction, syntax-- and explain how that expresses a universal idea or theme. You could also compare two characters in the story, or two ideas, or discuss how Steinbeck deals with setting, poverty and the human condition. Many of Steinbeck's novels deal with poverty and individuals struggling to survive against all odds.

Your thesis statement is just a summary ot your essay. Sometimes I wrote them AFTER I wrote the essay. Try that.
