My Father's Jokes by Patricia Zelver. It's in the Annual O Henry Awards anthology for 1978. One of the best short stories of the past 50 years (funny as hell--and touching too).

I suggest the "Gift of the Magi" by O'Henry. Story of pure and true love and sacrifice for that life.

The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson. Weird, but overwhelming if you get its message.
