I don't buy the unsubstantiated tale of the fur trapper that used one to kill a bare and wrote some letter to manufacturer.

Wikipedia mentions that even the manufacturer of KA BAR knives tell this story of how the name came to be. That it was a fur trapper who killed a bear with a knife because his gun has jammed. He wrote his name as " k a bar" and the company honored him by using it as the brand name for the knives.
