Carolyn Keene was only a pen name used by the creators of the Nancy Drew series,Stratemeyer Syndicate .

Several men and women wrote the stories under that pseudonym.

Edna and Harriet Stratemey inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer and they both contributed stories.

Other contributors include Mildred Wirt Benson who created 23 novels, including the first three Nancy Drew novels, Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression and a few others.

She's not a real person. Carolyn Keene is a pseudonym used by several ghostwriters over the years. There have been quite a few different versions of Nancy Drew -- the original, in the 1930's, then an updated (and watered-down) rewrite of those in the 1960's, then an all-new "Nancy Goes To College" type series in the 1990's, just to name a few.
