If you mean the origin of the species, they are close descendants of the early wild asses of Asia, and were among the first equine species domesticated by man.

If you mean where did the wild burros of the the American West came from, that is simple. They are the descendants of the burros used by prospectors and small farmers. They were either released , escaped, or just ran the open range until they became feral.
