my 8 month old daughter was holding onto the lounge, she loves standing and screams if she has to sit or lie down, i was holding onto her, but then she turned around and grabbed the heater ( it wasn't on thank God) and started falling, I grabbed her to stop her falling, but she was still holding onto the heater and smacked it into her head, she ended up with a little mark and a small bump. I know kids always hurt themselves, but this is the first time my bubba has gotten a "sore", I feel so guilty and like such a bad mum, I love her more than anything. Am I just being a normal mum, I rang my partner at work, I was crying and telling him what happened, he said to relax and she'd be fine and to settle down.

You're being normal, but her falling down is going to be normal too.

First, I look at the baby and smile. Babies look to you to see how they should react sometimes. If the baby smiles back, I know they're not hurt that bad.

If they start crying, or they're already wailing when they pick themselves up, you can tell that they're hurt. You can tell by the cry how bad it is for them.

Then, you watch them. A goose-egg on the forehead looks terrible, but is fairly common, you just keep an eye on them. If baby starts vomiting, or is lethargic after a fall, they need immediate emergency medical attention.

I really recommend a book called Baby 411, you can look up symptoms and what to do if your baby gets hurt. The book tells you whether you should just watch your baby, make an appointment the next day for the doctor, or if a trip to the ER is in order. If should give you some peace of mind.

Don't worry, I think we all freak out the first time our baby has a fall. But it is true that babies are allot tougher than they look. When ever my daughter fell or bumped her self I noticed she'd look at me for my reaction so I'd say (in a happy voice) "you're fine, up you get", and she would just keep going. But yes you are being a completely normal mum! I've freaked out, crying on the phone, the first time my bub fell too!

The more react, the more she will react. So if you get a 'horrified' look on your face, she's going to cry a lot more. If it's a fairly minor bump, you may not even want to rush right over to snuggle her. Usually if one of our kids gets a minor bump we'll look at them, smile and say "good bump kid."

This summer our four year old got stung by a yellow jacket on his finger (he was playing with it). He came up to us saying, "it hurts" but wasn't crying. We had him take us to where he got hurt to show us and when my husband saw the yellow jacket he said "oh, you got stung," well as soon as the 's' word was out there all he*l broke loose and he cried and carried on about it for over 15 minutes.

Obviously, your child is going to cry when she hurts herself, but keeping yourself calm will help her to stay more calm. Just make sure that she's not bleeding and nothings broken, then give a quick kiss and distract her with a toy.

I know this sounds awful, but I laugh! My 7 month old today pulled him self on the couch with puppy stairs (great for baby) and grabbed the sleeping cat, ********he is declawed***** and screams while he pulls his hair- well the cat smacked him a few good times. Kaiden looked at me with this pitiful face and was about to cry, it was so cute I stated laughing- in turn so did he.. he was crying and then laughing....

Well, before your baby gets into anything else, get on your hands and knees.. and baby proof. Make sure everything is secured to the wall/ground.
I know when my son falls on his face (i know it sounds soo crule) i love him up, and make him laugh.
Accidents happen, and thank goodness the heater wasnt on.
Kids are tuff! We , the parents have survived.

kids will always hurt themselves one way or another... one thing we did with my nephew, who is 2, when he falls down or gets hurt we just start clapping and say "yay" that way he is more comforted, he doesnt start crying, he just starts saying "yay" right along with us and gets up and goes back to playing
