Sure you can... just go to a doctor. The social security number is NOT required. Doctors do not care about that...

Actually, let me elaborate a bit...
This must be confusing for someone new to this country.

In this country (USA), there are two people involved in getting a medicine. A doctor and a pharmacist.

When I say medicine, I do not mean the kind that you can just buy at a drug store. Those are called "over the counter" medicine. Some headache medicine and other milder kind belongs in this category.

Stronger medicine are controlled by the federal government. To get one, a patient must be seen and examined by a doctor. It is illegal for a doctor to issue you a prescription without an examination. Only a licensed medical doctor (MD or DO) can prescribe you a medicine and issue a prescription. A prescription is good for one year. The prescription says what medicine you need, how strong it needs to be, how many days supply, and how often you must take it.

Then, the patient takes this prescription to a pharmacy. He then sell you the medicine. They call it "filling the prescription." Without a prescription, it is illegal to sell the medicine. Violating this law can send someone to jail for long time....

During this process, no one will ask you for your social security number. It is NOT required. Doctor's office MAY ask you for an identification, but for this purpose, your passport will do just fine.

By the way, if you want a social security number, all you have to do is to go to the social security office and fill out a form. Your's will say "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYEMNT" but you will have a valid number. It might come in handy, or least be a good memory....
