[A] survey of 3,000 adults from Aug. 1-18 was conducted for the Pew Research Center and the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.
The number of Americans who say Islam has little or nothing in common with their own religion has spiked to 70 percent in the past two years from 59 percent, the poll found.
Another significant shift has taken place: In 2005, 36 percent of the public said Islam is more likely than other faiths to encourage violence among its believers. That number has risen to 45 percent.

Quran - Sura 9:29
Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) until they pay the Jizyah (tax) with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

jpenergy@sbcglobal.n… - Boy you are just a little insult machine aren’t you? Anytime I see your comments on something you don’t agree with I can almost hear a puff if indignant elitist irritation and you toss out a few adolescent names and pat yourself on the back…
If you have bigger fish to fry then why are you here? Why did you even bother to comment? I will never understand people like you other than that you make yourself feel good with a false sense of superiority.

I know quite a bit about Islam, having worked with many Muslims everyday for the past 4 years.
I feel that Islam IS more likely to encourage violence. Not through religious means, mind you, but through oppression. Whether it's meant to or not, Muslim countries are ALL ruled by RELIGIOUS LAW, which forces religion on people. They have no choice. There are actually religious police whose sole purpose is to make sure that people are following religious laws (i.e. no meeting non-related females, enforcing prayer time, not eating during daylight hours during Ramadan, making sure women remain covered).
Additionally, due to its oppressive nature, ALL Muslim nations are third world countries. Yet, many have vast wealth due to oil. Why is that? Their religion teaches them that everything is Allah's will and that life is about dominance. This leads them to put little or no importance on infrastructure. They import slave labor (literally, not figuratively) and treat them like dogs; I've seen it with my own eyes. They pay them very low wages to do menial and disgusting jobs. They dominate and oppress woman along with anyone else they feel is inferior.
They control everything from the radio stations to television channels. They have national firewalls on the internet to control content.
Islamic States still condone honor killings and female circumcision. The condone hanging for being homosexual. Islamic states are stuck in the Stone Age in terms of human rights. It's very archaic.
All of this leads to an environment that breeds intolerance, angst, hate and fear. This leads to a class system that would make most American's stop complaining about upper, lower and middle class in our country. In these countries, if you're not a "local" you're dirt. This also leads to low levels of education, which fosters ignorance, which encourages jealousy and hate.
This can be easily demonstrated by pointing to the Danish Cartoon incident, what happened? Muslims rioted, burned buildings, attacked the Danish Embassy, KILLED PEOPLE. It happens every time someone offends their culture. Look at France last year. Or what happened when the photos from Abu Ghrab hit the press, or when the false story of interrogators placing the Quran on in the toilet, or when accusations of abuse at Gitmo hit the press. Every time, these people resorted to rioting, burning and killing.
I'm not saying that the religion of Islam is what the cause of this is; it's the way Islam is APPLIED to Muslims that creates the problem.

But you see no signs of belligerence in the Christian Old Testament? The two religions have more in common than most members of either would like to believe.

This shouldn't come as lots of as marvel to absolutely everyone. the folk of San Francisco have a protracted background of rejecting authority, no remember who's in fee. How do you think of the Golden Gate Bridge have been given outfitted? the government refused to fund it, so they paid for it themselves. i do no longer constantly trust their motives, yet a minimum of they are consistent.

I woke up a long time ago to what Islam is,just as I woke up to what all the Abrahamic Religions are. If interpreted literally they are all religions of oppression.Islam is only the worst, and most dangerous at this point because of the percentage of it's followers that take all of its scriptures literally, which literally makes it one of the most oppressive and divisive forces on Earth.

Interesting figures. But nothing surprising. You saw similar rises in bigotry against Japanese -Americans during WW2--and there are plenty of other examples.
Where it comes from is the fact that a lot of Amricans are not "waking up"--they've simply been sucked into the propaganda of bigots. After things cool down, the overwhelming majority of these people will drop the bigoted attitudes and go back to acting like Americans--i.e. tolerant, not bigoted.
BTW--Check out the Bible--Joshua 8:26-28. You'll find that and other passages in the Christian text are just as bloody, intolerant, and violent as anything inthe Qu'ran.

That same survey also showed that the majority of Americans know little or nothing about Islam. When the majority know very little about Islam, I don't see how the people as a whole can be wizening or waking up to any reality. When you combine that ignorance with the increased negativity you mention, it actually paints a very unflattering and xenophobic picture of Americans.
