I think it is because an educated person would see beyond his/her own immediate needs and gratification and make decisions, through his or her votes that would consider not only his/her own needs but the needs of others and possibly future generations, something we sorely need today.

For people to be able to make informed voting decisions, they must be educated about the candidates. This means that people who are well-read (having knowledge in various subjects) will be able to make a better choice than someone who is just basing it off the commercials they see.
Say Bob couldn't read, and Bob saw everywhere on TV that Politician A was supporting an increase in taxes. All he knew from friends is that the increase had something to do with a third world country. So Bob thought Politician A was really some loser trying to take our hard-earned money and give it to some destitute country. So he wouldn't vote for Politician A.
BUT Politician A was really suggesting an increase in taxes for a limited time to provide funds to that country in educational reform. That way, people in the third world country would be better educated and be able to sustain their economy without help. It would decrease the amount of illegal immigrants coming to Bob's country, who were using the education system and health system of Bob's country without paying taxes themselves, therefore increasing Bob's taxes anyways.
If Bob knew more about various subjects he would be able to see that view point and it may sway his view on politician A, but not being Literatre, poor Bob had no idea.
P.S. Great Point Cavassi!

Presumably an educated populace is better equipped to deal with political demagogues.

One cannot remain free unless one can think and discern lucidly for himself. Otherwise, we are sheep.
