I know that it stands for "Identification", but when I see "I.D.", What does that "D" stand for? If you get pulled over by a cop, and he asks for some I.D., can I say "My I.D.? Oh, do you mean my Identification Dentification"?

I'm sorry, I'm in a silly mood! It may be just another one of those things that doesn't have an explanation in the English language. Just curious for an answer, if there is one. I hope at least it brought about a laugh! Thanks and take care....

I think it's technically Identification Document/Documentation but I'm not positive.

The D doesn't stand for anything, except apparently just the d in the word IDentification. Kinda dumb if you think about it. Thay should just abbreviate it "I."

I guess they call it ID because some people are to lazy to get their tongue around all six syllables of the word, and it would sound weird if one said, "Can I see your I?" By the same token, why does IE stand for "example"?

Oh, maybe ID stands for Identically Dedicated!! LOL!!
