And, if, for example, a person has left their partner 5 times before, is it expected for them to come back for a 6th?

Common sense or psychology?

Some people have a hard time letting go. After they have left someone for some reason, it seems to them that that have made a mountain out of a molehill, and they try again. Many woman who have been beaten keep going back to the batterer and even make excuses for him. Often they had childhoods with a similar parent or they were physically or emotionally abused as children and have low self-esteem. These people and others are also loathe to leave the known and familiar for the unknown and unfamiliar.
