Since there is actually no such place as the west rim of The Grand Canyon , I guess you will have to take him to the place which does actually exist and that's the South Rim.
The " West Rim "is name that some developers' marketing department made up to promote tourist sites that they were buiding on that end of the Rio Colorado
DO NOT take yourself and your son there, To say that you will be disappointed would be a huge understatement

The West Rim is actually not exactly part of the Grand Canyon. It is a tributary canyon that runs into the Grand Canyon and is not as dramatic. However it does have an advantage if you like helicopters which are allowed to go beneath the ground level of the West Rim. For the South and North rims, you are prohibited from any kind of flight into the canyon which means you can only see it from a ride or walk into the canyon or above it from an aircraft. I love helicopters so for me it was pretty neat to go into the West Rim. However, if you are looking at just the views, the South Rim is the best followed closely by the North Rim (when it is open to the public). Although the West Rim is a lot closer there is less to see and take in.

The choice is usually the south rim vs the north rim. The canyon runs east to west.

I've never been to the north rim, but the south rim is where most of the park service stuff is.
