It's become more common because of people gaining weight.
When I was thinner,my feet were a size 9.
When I gained weight,my feet retained water,and I became a size 11.

I do believe that size 11s are becoming more common, but stores aren't stacking the shelves enough for us. I'm still getting the "Oh, we don't have your size" phrase almost everywhere I go, and I am very hard pressed to find flats in my size. Boots, for some reason, just don't go above a 10, but I have been seeing more size 11 heels. Unfortunately, they're often stilettos and open-toed.
10 does seem to be an average size now, because I remember growing up (I'm still a teen) and having problems finding 10s at that time. I think in a couple more years size 11 shoes will be more widespread and then 12s will be making their way into the mainstream.

im a size 8, sometimes an 8 1/2. and where i usually am: mall/home/school/church, thats an average size. if u DO have size 10+ feet, nordstrom rack has REALLY cute shoes *including flats* for bigger shoe sizes. i know this, because i always see the cute flats and boots in size 11's, and they are out in my size. and usually nordstrom rack has good sales. like $60 at the most. <3
