This begs the question - what is more important a gold for the U.S., or any other country, in X number of events, or a country achieving democracy gold (democarcy) after 50 years of struggle. The Olympics certainly can be used as leverage in order for China to persuade the military regime of Burma to (a) allow peaceful demonstrations in Myanmar void of guns, tear gas and the like (b) to elinquish their power to which they have no right. They were voted out in 1989/90 and the regime has continued to kill innocent people, rape women and children ever since, in order to quell any type of uprising. If I were an Olympic athlete, there would be contest - I would stay home if boycotting the games made a difference to the future of Burma.

I do not think China should be blamed for Burma's actions with their own stance.

The International Olympic Committee are the ones to cancel Olympic Games. However, the Olympic Games of 1936 in Germany took place and who was in power then...

What you should factor into your post is you are getting your news from interested parties. Burma has oil and gas and their preferred trading partner is China. There are several countries that do not like the western way of life. That is personal debt and a vast rich and poor divide. And there is an opposition who are more vocal than the opposition we get in the west. Both are not encouraged.

And this is where they are at. China has its political system which the west hates so when any crackpot goes protesting in the streets its like world news. We have to get used to these different systems

The Olympic games are an international event - America could boycott them, but not cancel them.

Cancelling orders for lead-painted toys and poisonous pet food would probably have more of an impact, anyway.

China always held the policy of not "interfering" with other countries' affairs. It is China's policy that any nation's internal conflicts is a matter for that nation to resolve internally. So, nobody could really blame the Chinese for refusing to act. After all, the US is already heavily criticized around the world for its countless interference in other nation's affairs (especially in the Middle-East).

It is a total paradox to me that China is being criticized for its actions on Taiwan (which after all, is a province of China), while at the same time criticizing it for refusing to act on other nations such as Burma.

That's a bad idea because China is working to a different set of beliefs.

If you threaten to boycott the Olympics, it then soon becomes, do this or I boycott the Olympics, do that or I boycott blah blah blah....it'll end nowhere.

The Chinese have recently started to change their policy, see link below...

But they remain deeply suspicious about foreigners.

The West and China can either butt heads about this, or find some way through, but boycotting the games won't do much.

China is the neighbour of Burma(Myanmar).China is the big brother in Asia like US in the West.Chinese influence in Burma is due to nearness, religios links, common culture and history reinforced by economic considerations.
I think Olympic games should be above politics. There are many other fronts for fighting.

Because we don't control the Olympics. All we could do is boycott. Which would achieve nothing but screwing over our own athletes who've been training like madmen their entire lives.

The Olympic games is about humans excelling in physical sport not politics.

Leave it alone.
