Yes, because many of us either don't plan for our future, have no idea how to do it, or simply can not afford it.
The anti social security crowd has the one size fits all attitude.
That is a major concept of communist ideology.

Unfortunately it has become necessary because so many people have come to depend on social security as part of their retirement income. If for some reason the government can no longer pay out the social security a lot of people will be in trouble.

Social Security is provided as a financial safety net for people who do not have a large retirement income. It is needed in the US today because the US educational system does not teach people how to be financially independent.
The Social Security program in the US is needed to provide an "income of the last resort" for individuals who did not or were not able to become financially independent on their own.
The Social Security program is needed in the US so the government can maintain control over the downtrodden and poor within the country.

Yes, it is important!
1. The elderly shouldn't have to work when they hit a certain age. They are usually riddled with physical and/or mental problems that a younger worker doesn't have.
2. They paid into it with their wages. It is THEIR money. Not the government to take out of whenever they need extra money like has happened in the past!

Yes of course. Especially the elderly. There are so many old people that cannot get by even with social security. And that is so sad because most of them spent their whole lives taking care of others. We should be taking care of our elderly. They have been taking care of us for so long. They deserve more.

It is a source of retirement income to those of retirement age.
For people with no pensions from work, and little savings, it may be the only retirement income.
Social Security also includes Medicare for medical benefits to retired persons.

I normally don't like helping people with their homework, but, I like the question, so here's my take on it:
1) The US Gov't is unable to take care of its own people, due to the lack of socialized medicine or universal healthcare, whatever you want to call it, among other things, which would cost the taxpayers, and, heaven knows, we don't want to spend money to help anyone else, so Social Security has to fill-in whatever gaps Medicare and Medicaid and other social programs can't, such as food, living expenses, etc.
2) People do not take the responsibility to save on their own. How many actors and musicians were at the top of the A-list, and are now penniless due to their extravagant ways? How many folks have you seen drive way-too-expensive cars, or buy incredibly useless "bling", such as gold teeth (remember when kids *didn't* want ugly dental braces?) or tattoos or spinning wheels on their car? (what's scarier, to me, is that people like that vote!) ;)
Good luck on your report!
