GTB, I apologize I did not know that such a person with high IQ would answer my question.

I might not know what I am doing that is why I came here. It seems that every other answer to my question was helpful without any Digaroty comments.

For future reference is you see a question of mine please refrain from answering it, as I am not worthy to be on the same page as you.

I believe you are very confused and really do not understand what you are doing.

I understand that you have a broadband service which is most likely terminated by a modem.

This modem feeds a router and your pc along with your wife's pc and all other pcs on your LAN are fed from your router.

The router and modem may be integrated into one unit but that does not invalidate what you have.

Let's talk about the public, routeable IP address. This is the one given you by your ISP. It is either a static IP or a dynamic IP.

If it is static, you pay an additional fee for it being static and your ISP has provided you this IP address along with the subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS addresses. To change this, you need to have your ISP change it for you and then you need to change your router WAN port settings to reflect this change or you will have no service.

If it is dynamic, it changes each time you reboot.

Now, there is no security reason to change your public IP address as this does not relate to security. If you believe that changing your public IP address is security related, you are mistaken.

Each pc on your LAN has a private, non-routeable IP address which is provided by your router if it is dynamic, and which you define if it is static. It must be on the same subnet as the router LAN port if you assign it.

Changing the private IP addres is also not a security related matter and changing it does not address any security issue.

Also, if you have NO router, and plug your pc into the modem your public IP address (either static or dynamic) is provided by the ISP and changing it does not address security. Plugging in your pc and later your wife's pc into the modem does nothing for security either.

Your ISP tracks the issuance of its IP addresses so a dynamic IP assignment is trackable and retrievable through the ISP's records. In fact there have been search warrent retrieved IP address records used by Police Departments to link individuals in criminal activity.

Perhaps you need to better understand security in computer networks. It is clear you do not at this time have any such understanding.

You don't really have control over this. If you have a static IP address, you would have had to set it up manually and you probably pay extra for it. Most likely, you have a DHCP assigned address. You can request a new address, which is what ipconfig /renew does, but you'll probably be reassigned the IP address you had.
