Wisconsin Rep. David Obey, a veteran Democrat, recounted how he left the Republican Party during the era of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-Wis., and said that lawmakers have an obligation to criticize their allies as well as their enemies when they go too far.

"I've got an obligation to be equally upset when that kind of juvenile debate emanates from the left," Obey said.

For Pete's sake! Get over the freaking ad! Freedom! Freedom! Freedom! Those that believe Petraus is an instrument of the war mongers don't need an ad to tell them so, and those that believe Petraus is honest and truthful wouldn't recognize the truth if they saw it on the NFL!

Do you criticize the right when they go to far? If not then you're missing Obey's point,

As for the Petraeus ad, the cons who have been critical of it don't seem to be able to get past the headline. There are specifics in the ad which I haven't heard anyone on the right address, let alone argue against.

Those who voted for that BS reprimand are cowards. The Senate in this instance is not supporting the rights of the people, because it is in direct conflict with the first amendment of the constitution. The Senate has no place in the social commentary business or condemning anybody for publishing their views. It isn't that the individual members are speaking against it, but drafting legislation is a different story. Obviously elected officials have the right as well to speak out on what they believe in, but editorials by senators shouldn't be voted on. On top of that it was hypocritical by the Republicans, because they refused to back a bill condemning similar attacks against John Kerry and Murtha which I also based upon my personal views I wouldn't have supported either.

I think the MoveOn ad went overboard, and basically agree with Obey.

In general Dems in congress are okay, but a bit spineless sometimes.

I'm disgusted they waste their time talking about the stupid ad and condemn it when it means nothing. This is what we are (over)paying them for?
