The situation is that this new position entails supervising a group of people. One of those people is the person who used to fill the position I am now in (he was essentially demoted). I like the person, and I want to make sure things go smoothly. Does anyone else who has been in this predicament have any tips on making things jive well between me and the other employee?

I have been in your situation and here's what I did: I went to the person I replaced and told her that it wasn't my decision to replace her. I mentioned tyhat I thought she was doing a good job and frankly, I didn't understand the politics of the change. I explained that I thought I would need her help and valued any ideas she had. It all worked out very well except that our boss was a total idiot & we both ended up leaving the job. Good luck!

My expression is "Bottom rail up" lol...It doesn't have to be delicate. Just realize that this person is going to be bitter toward the company and you and will probably be looking for a job. I wouldn't even bother trying to establish a relationship as it won't be long before it's over anyway.

I have been in that situation and it's hard. What is important is that you don't act like you're the **** - and how the person handles it - well, not much you can do about that.
