This is such a TOUGH question.

How can this be fairly answered considering that there are so many genres of music out there?!

But some of those genres I don't think could have existed if it weren't for two men....

So it is with no hesitancy I say it is a tie between Jimi Hendrix (paved the way for what blues, jazz, and even R&B was to become) and Jimmy Page (paved the way for anything remotely rock)

Take care!

Personally I would choose Jimmy Page, but there is an case for others such as Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Howe, Dave Gilmour, Hendrix, Kirk Hammett, and some even say Tony Iommi. It's down to personal choice, but I have to say that it has to be Jimmy Page none of the others come close.

Hendrix - took the electric guitar and turned the instrument into a wall of symphonic notes.....his playing was in the realm of jazz, avant-garde and defined what became hard rock/heavy metal......one of the greatest musicians ever - in the same breath with Satchmo, Duke, Bird, Coltrane, Davis.

The others mentioned so far are great without a doubt, but the guy who inspired much of the 80's guitar hard rock sound and died tragically in a freak plane crash will always get my vote.
Randy Rhoads.
